Then, in December 2018, Blueface dropped Famous Cryp, which lead to immediate success. “Thotiana,” the album’s lead single, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 75 and quickly climbed to its peak position: #4 on the chart. There have been countless “Thotiana” remixes: Everyone from YG to Cardi B to Nicki Minaj hopped on the song, and it seems as though no one can rid themselves of the infectious tune. Blueface also cannot rid himself of controversy.
On February 1, 2019, and later released on a $35,000 bail for being in possession of a loaded and unregistered handgun. Although it is unclear where the legal proceedings will go once he is tried, Blueface is facing up to three years behind bars.
Just days after his arrest, the rapper made more headlines when he shared on Instagram after a trans woman slid into his DMs. The next phases of Blueface’s career will be pivotal, as he looks to capitalize on his viral buzz.
L.A. rapper Blueface rose up on the strength of a few viral tracks, becoming instantly famous after less than a year of even considering music as a career. Ten-song mixtape Famous Cryp offers a brief snapshot of his style, characterized by a flow that seems entirely unconcerned with following the beat and a vocal style that gasps, sputters, and stumbles as it rolls out weird but charismatic one-liners and hooks. The project begins with breakthrough track 'DeadLocs.' Perhaps the most solid representation of his style, Blueface ramps up his energy as the song goes on until he's basically ranting offbeat by the track's apex. Other strong tracks include the heavy and threatening 'Respect My Cryppin' and the party-friendly 'Thotiana.' On these tracks, the rapper's lyrical spirit is in full view, churning out sharp and merciless lines like 'That boy got on a necklace. Talking out his neck til I leave his ass neck-less.' Not every song reaches the same heights, as Blueface shouts sex rhymes on 'Freak Bitch' and recycles hooks on the title track. At just over 21 minutes, Famous Cryp doesn't overstay its welcome but still verges on tiresome. Blueface's manic flow recalls moments of Silk the Shocker or Suga Free's splintered Rorschach test rhyme styles. Listeners with an affinity for offbeat and untraditional approaches to rap will find a lot to love in Blueface, but his style in the earliest phases of his career promises to polarize.
